Beverly Kay Cleveland, 71, of Carthage, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at FirstHealth Hospice House, following an almost five-year battle with cancer.
Born in Odessa, Minnesota, Bev was the daughter of the late Orville and Lois Hanson Sherod. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Michael Sherod.
Bev grew up in Minnesota and graduated from Ortonville High School in 1972 before attending Willmar Vocational College. She worked at the Ortonville Red Owl and later bartended at the Odessa Bar before beginning a new chapter of life with her husband, Ken. In 1979, Bev and Ken moved to his Naval duty station on Whidbey Island, Washington, marking the beginning of a life filled with travel, adventure, and a deep dedication to family.
Throughout Ken’s military career, Bev made homes in NAS Lemoore, California; Moore, Oklahoma; NAF Atsugi, Japan; and several times on Whidbey Island. She worked at the Base Theater in Lemoore, the Navy Exchange on Whidbey Island, and managed the Navy Wives Club Thrift Store in Atsugi. While living in Oklahoma, she earned her Dental Laboratory Technician Certificate and later worked as a dental lab technician—an accomplishment she was very proud of.
Bev was creative and patient, and she found joy in sewing, crocheting, and a wide array of craft projects. She loved tending to her flower gardens with Ken and treasured the companionship of the many cats she cared for over the years. Bev enjoyed playing cards with family, spoiling her grandchildren, and never turned down a game of bingo. She also loved exploring new restaurants, trying new foods, and savoring a good margarita. Friday nights were reserved for a rum and Coke with lime—made by Ken, whom she always insisted made them best.
Family was at the center of Bev’s life. She made countless trips back to Minnesota to care for her aging parents, ensuring they were supported and loved in their later years. Her travels also took her to Osan, South Korea; Hong Kong; Vancouver, Canada; Mannheim, Germany; Rome, Italy; Hawaii; and many memorable destinations within the United States.
Bev is survived by her devoted husband of 46 years, Kenneth Cleveland of Carthage; two daughters, Nicole Savely (Tim) of Carthage and Rhoda Granum (Randy) of Dupont, Washington; four brothers, Lee Sherod of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, David Sherod (Lynn) of New London, Minnesota, Darrell Sherod (Tanja) of Ortonville, Minnesota, and Robert Sherod (Lori) of Odessa, Minnesota; and two sisters, Patty Sherod of Alexandria, Minnesota, and Marlene Sherod of Odessa, Minnesota. She also leaves behind five cherished grandchildren: Dylan Granum, Katie Granum, Zaida Savely, Willa Savely, and Hazel Savely.
