Milford (Mac) McDaniel, Jr. of Whispering Pines died Friday (October 25, 2013) at home.
A graveside service will be held 3:30 PM Saturday (November 2, 2013) at Cross Hill Cemetery in Carthage with full military honors.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 3:00 PM at Powell Funeral Home.
Born in Newark, NJ in 1926, he was the last surviving child of the late Milford McDaniel and Pearl Reynolds McDaniel. After graduating from Nutley High School he entered the U.S. Navy during WWII where he received the Victory Medal and both the American and Asiatic Pacific Theater Medals. He was honorably discharged on June 30, 1946.
After the war he went to work with Fidelity Union Trust Co. and soon after on April 17, 1948 he would marry his beloved wife Lillian McLaren McDaniel. During this time he was a Boy Scout leader and played semi pro baseball. In 1960 he went to work for Sperry and Hutchinson Co. (S&H Green Stamps) where he worked for many years as a sales representative. He was an avid bowler and was a league secretary for 17 years. In 1988 he was voted into the Middlesex County Bowling Hall of Fame. Mac was also an accomplished golfer. He was a member of Hillsborough Country Club in New Jersey and won several club championships. He owned and operated Milford's Frame Service for several years and also was the day manager for Sarah Jane's Restaurant in Sommerville, NJ.
In 1985 Milford and Lillian moved to Whispering Pines. Mac was a food and beverage manager at the Pitt Golf Links and worked a number of years at Pinehurst Country Club as a Starter/Ranger. He 'unofficially' retired in 2006 and worked with his son at Champion Car Wash in Southern Pines.
On July 22nd of this year he lost his wife of 65 years. He was also preceded in death by two brothers Neal and William McDaniel.
He is survived by: a son David McDaniel of Southern Pines, a daughter Maureen McCarthy and husband Michael of Carthage and a granddaughter Ashley McDaniel of Charlotte.
David and Maureen are forever grateful for the love, devotion and sacrifice that their parents showed to them.
