Richard W. Stone, 'Rick' of Southern Pines, NC died peacefully on March 10, 2013 in Pinehurst, NC. Rick was born on November 19, 1939 in Centralia, IL to the late Oscar and Irma Stone. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jack, and his sister-in- law, Diane.
A celebration of his life will take place on Saturday, March 16, at 2:00pm at Page Memorial United Methodist Church in Aberdeen, NC.
A reception will follow the service at Table on the Green, 1224, Midland Country Club, Midland Road, Pinehurst, NC.
A military service with full honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Doris Stone, his son, Craig and wife, Joan of Raleigh, NC; nieces, Machelle Stone of Centralia, IL; Lisa Gaines and her husband Bill of Raleigh, NC; Katie Douglass of Kansas City, MO; Meghan Stone and Laura McGuire of Chicago IL; and nephew, Clint McDaniel of Centralia, IL. He also leaves behind his wonderful 'family 'at Knollwood Village.
Rick served in the military for 24 years. During his service years, Sergeant Major Stone was stationed in Seoul, South Korea, Nurnburg, Germany, and was a Vietnam veteran. His last duty station was at the Presidio in San Francisco, CA. He began his second career as a deputy sheriff in Salem, IL where he returned to his hometown. After career number two ended, he retired to NC to be near 'the kids' and warmer weather.
Rick was a man who had so many gifts. One of his gifts was that he never met a stranger. He was friendly, quick witted, and very talented. His hobbies included golf, traveling, and woodcarving. He created beautiful furniture and many wood carvings. All will surely miss his smile and joie de vivre.
