Aubrey Judson “AJ” Wooddy, age 90 of Southern Pines died Wednesday (August 6, 2014) at his home.
The family will plan a private memorial service at a later date.
A native of Richmond Va., he was a son of the late Clayton Judson Wooddy and Lucy Bell Pennington Wooddy. After graduating from high school in 1942 he joined the US Navy. A WWII veteran, he served in various Naval Air Stations throughout the US and overseas: including the Central Pacific and participating in the Gilbert Island invasion in November 1943. While in service he married Carolyne Marie Lewis on April 28, 1945 and was honorably discharged from the Navy later that year as an AEM 1/C (Aviation Electrician Mate First Class).
He attended Virginia Tech graduating with a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1950. After graduation he went to work with Tidewater Power Company (subsequently Carolina Power and Light) in Wilmington, NC. He retired in 1987 as District Manager in Southern Pines.
His held various professional offices including: President of the Wilmington Engineers Club in 1959, President of the NC Society of Engineers in 1964 and was a lifetime member. He became a Registered Professional Engineer for the state of NC in 1960.
His civic involvement included membership in the Goldsboro Kiwanis Club in 1962, Rotary Club of Raleigh 1963-66, Rotary Club of Asheboro 1967-72, Asheboro City Board of Education 1969-72, President, Greater Asheboro Chamber of Commerce 1970, President, Sandhills Area Chamber of Commerce 1980, President, Sandhills Kiwanis Club 1982. He was a lifelong Methodist and member of the Southern Pines United Methodist Church since 1972.
He is survived by: his children Aubrey Judson “Skipper” Wooddy, Jr and wife Helen of Charleston, SC, Leslie Wooddy Cox and husband Michael of Ijamsville, MD, Clayton Lee Wooddy and wife Leslie of Raleigh, Deborah W. Denmark and husband Jay of Raleigh; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

I was Mr Wooddy’s secretary for 5 years in Southern Pines. I am so blessed to have worked with him.
