Joseph Raymond Woodard, age 90, of Belle Meade died Saturday, January 24, 2015 at the St. Joseph of the Pines Health Center in Southern Pines, NC.

A memorial service will be held at the Belle Meade Chapel on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at 11:00 am with Dr. John Jacobs of The Village Chapel officiating.  Following the service a reception will be held in the Belle Meade Club. Private services will be held at the Pinelawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Southern Pines, NC.

Mr. Woodard was born September 28, 1924, son of the late George Ollie and Mamie Whitley Woodard.  He was born in Nash county and graduated from Spring Hope High.  He completed his under graduate and graduate studies at North Carolina State University and was always employed by NCSU.

He served in the US Navy during World War II.  Later, he flew as a Major with the Civil Air Patrol.

In 1951, he married Ellen Joyce Clark of Everetts, NC.  After retiring as a Professor Emeritus at NCSU, he and Ellen moved in 1985 to Pinehurst, NC.  They became active members of The Village Chapel.  In July, 1999, they moved to Belle Meade.

He is survived by his wife and three brothers, Carl Woodard & wife, Sandy of Carolina Trace, Sanford, NC, Bruce Woodard & wife, Ann of Smithfield, NC and Clifton Woodard & wife, Pat of Milford, MA.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Ruby Othell and his brother, Vernon Woodard.  He served as a volunteer with the International Executive Service Corps in Greece and South Korea.  Also, he went on a tour to Poland and the USSR with the Dwight D. Eisenhower Program Organization.  He was honored by many agricultural associations for his work at NCSU.
