Dr. Bryan Rufus Reep Sr., 85, of Southern Pines, passed away peacefully Friday, April 10, 2015, after a short illness.

A celebration of his life will take place at 1 p.m. Friday, April 17, at Southern Pines United Methodist Church. There will also be a reception at Penick Village at 2 p.m.

Bryan Reep, son of the late Alfred Roy Reep and Lilly Lackey Reep, was born on May 18, 1929, in Fallston. Bryan earned degrees from Duke and NC State and then a Ph.D. of Public Health from UNC. He worked for the NC State Board of Health and then was a professor at Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst until his retirement.

He and his wife Betty were members of Southern Pines United Methodist Church. In his free time, Bryan was an avid gardener and enjoyed fishing with his friends, Bob and Linda Fisher. As a alumnus of three local universities, he always enjoyed watching his teams' sports events on TV.

He lived a long and fulfilling life and was loved by his family, and made many new friends since their move to Penick Village in 2011.

Bryan is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Betty Reep; his sons Bryan Reep Jr. (wife Liz), of Durham, and Sam Reep, of Boynton Beach, Fla.; and granddaughters Avery Reep, of Charlotte, Emily Reep, of Wilmington, and Allison Reep, of Durham. He is also survived by a sister, Marlene Guthrie (husband Edward), of Hickory. Sharing our grief is his longtime friend, Jim Anderson.

Flowers may be sent to Penick Village, 500 East Rhode Island Ave., Southern Pines, or memorials in his honor may be sent to Southern Pines United Methodist Church or the charity of one's choice.
