Leonard Tufts, grandson of the founder of Pinehurst, died at home on Wednesday, April 27, 2016.
Leonard was born in Pinehurst on Thanksgiving Day, 1927, to Frances Easton Tufts and Albert Tufts. Who knew that the “Thanksgiving” spirit would influence him for the next 88 years?

He was wed to Joyce Bottomley of Wisconsin in May 1960 and they established in Pinehurst, Leonard working in the family business with Pinehurst Inc. When the company was sold in 1970, Len focused his interests on the Forest Stewardship Program, of which he was a charter member, as well as the American Tree Farm System, The Voluntary Farm, Voluntary Agricultural Districts and organizations promoting the natural way of life. He was a charter member of Moore County Beekeepers, established in 1982, and the Master Gardeners of Moore County.
