Esther Lee Wilkes Frye, age 102, of Airport Road, Carthage, died Monday June 6, 2016.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church (formerly Yates-Thagard Baptist Church), 3253 Niagara-Carthage Rd., Whispering Pines, 28327, conducted by the Rev. Darrell Garner. Burial will follow at Yates -Thagard Cemetery.

 

Esther was born December 4, 1913. She grew up in a house in Scotland County without plumbing or electricity, and lived to see men travel to the moon and return. She attended elementary school in the one-room Temperance Hall School, and graduated from high school in  Wagram. She married Curtis Frye and they moved to Moore County around 1930. Living a short distance from Knollwood Field, they witnessed the military training exercises for World War II aircraft. She was first employed at St. Joseph’s Hospital, as a Nurses Aid. While working there she attended classes at night in order to become a Licensed Practical Nurse and continued working at St. Joseph’s for many years. Later in her career, she switched to private duty nursing, and continued to care for those in need. She was a friend and neighbor of Sandhills Community College. On December 4, 2013, she turned 100, and the college turned 50.

 

She was preceded in death by her mother Maggie Wilkes and her husband Curtis Frye.

 

She is survived by her children: Floyd Frye and wife Sarah of Carthage, Betsy Short and husband Mike of Whispering Pines, Clara Phibbs and husband Jay of Schroon Lake, NY, Donald Frye and wife Leslie of Chesterfield, VA; grandchildren John Frye and wife Tamara, Whispering Pines,  Glenn Short and wife Lori, Lakeview,  Jim Phibbs and wife Laurie, Cliftonpark, NY,  Beverly Dunlop and husband Richard, Whispering Pines,  Sharon Smith and husband Dan, Schroon Lake, NY;  great-grandchildren Curtis, Colby, Danielle, Michael, Ben, Carly, Riley, Kristen and Carrie; several great-great-grandchildren.

 

In lieu of memorials, honor Mrs. Frye’s career of caregiving by finding someone in need and caring for them.

 

Friends are encouraged to visit with the family after the service at the family home on Airport Road.
