Alan Thomas Lyle

December 9, 1959 ~ October 26, 2016
Alan Thomas Lyle, 56, of Aberdeen passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, October 26, 2016. He is survived by his beloved and cherished wife of 28 years, Glenda Ketron Lyle, his father, James F. Lyle, Sr. of Seymour, (Knoxville), Tennessee and sister Valarie Lyle and husband Mark Smith of Bristol, Tennessee, many aunts, uncles, cousins, brothers in-laws and sister in-laws, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother, Phyllis Eggers Lyle and brother, James F. Lyle, Jr.
Alan was born December 9, 1959 in Erwin, Tennessee and raised in Knoxville. He was a member of the West Hills Baptist Church. He graduated from Bearden High School, class of 1978 and attained rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in Business. He worked with the Youth Conservation Corp, a Division of the Forestry Service on many environmental projects. He worked for Knoxville Trim and then, Farm Bureau and served as an insurance agent for many years. He entered the Wal-mart Management Training Program and became Assistant Manager in stores in Georgia and Tennessee for many years. He later joined Lowe’s Home Improvement for many years. He also served as a substitute rural mail carrier for the Aberdeen Post Office for years as well as worked for the Federal Census Bureau. He worked for Food Lion, Inc. in recent years.
He volunteered for Habitat for Humanity on home building projects. His passion was being a volunteer for more than 30 years at the Lake Eden Arts Festival in Black Mountain, NC, a festival held twice each year dedicated to providing music and art for youth and schools.
He loved hiking in the Smokey Mountains and Blue Ridge Mountains and all of nature and was ever conscious of the need to recycle and re-purpose, wasting nothing.
Alan was well known for always supporting the arts and music and numerous community events, always happiest when sharing with others the available opportunities and encouraging them to “just take out a little time to have some fun”. Alan was a loving, true and loyal husband, son, brother, uncle, cousin, neighbor and friend. Throughout his life, he performed daily random acts of kindness and always tried to have an encouraging and uplifting word for those who crossed his path. He was particularly attentive to persons who were less fortunate, always offering a helping hand to any in need.
He and his wife Glenda, and family wish to acknowledge with grateful appreciation the excellent and caring medical care received from First Health of the Carolinas staff, Dr. Ellen Willard and staff, Liberty Home Health and all of the supportive friends. His difficult journey was made easier by their kind and expert attention.
Alan made the world a better place and his life taught us all that every day we should be kind, turn the other cheek, and do any good for our fellow man or woman that we have the capacity to do. He will be missed greatly by all those who knew and loved him. He was a good and faithful servant and brightened the lives of many.
In keeping with Alan’s life philosophy and at his request, his body has been dedicated to the Anatomical Resource Clinical Training Center at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston Salem, NC for use in research and study for the purpose of continuing to help others and perhaps an ultimate part in finding the cure for diseases that claim lives.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at Bethesda Presbyterian Church, 1002 Sandhills Boulevard in Aberdeen. Flowers are welcome or donations may be made in his honor, making checks payable and his name on the comment line to LEAF Community Arts, 377 Lake Eden Road, Black Mountain, NC 28711-8709.
Powell Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the Lyle family.
