Buford 'Chief Mac' McKenzie, 94, went home to Jesus Tuesday morning, October 15, 2013 following a long full life.
Chief Mac was born near Mount Olive, MS and was most well-know for developing the therapeutic camping model for helping emotionally and behaviorally troubled youth. Chief Mac pioneered the Salesmanship Club program in Dallas, TX under the leadership of Campbell Loughmiller in the late 1940's and 1950's. During the 1960's and 1970's McKenzie developed the Eckerd Youth Alternatives program in Florida. He retired after starting and directing the Cameron Boys Camp in Cameron, NC. In the late 1990's Chief Mac led the establishment of Wilderness Road Therapeutic Camping Association, Inc., a group of currently ten member camps committed to preserving and promoting the original Loughmiller program model.
Chief Mac leaves behind his wife. Lois, and five children. Two sons, Kris of San Angelo, TX, and Kerry of Bahama, NC. McKenzie's daughters are Karen Collins of Fair Play, SC, Kayla Gibson of Cameron, NC and Kobi Hart of Louisville, KY, and was preceded in death by his son Kent Earl. The McKenzie's have 19 grandchildren.
Funeral Services where held 2:00 PM Friday, October 18th at New Home Baptist Church in Vass, NC conducted by Rev. Scott Hart. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
A camp memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, November 2, 2013 at New Home Baptist Church.
