Clarence Eugene “Henry” Smith, age 88, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at FirstHealth Hospice House with his family by his side.
Henry was a native of Gaston County and the son of the late Clarence Robert and Wilma Maney Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Sheppard Smith, who passed away in 2005, and his son, Richard Dale Smith.
A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, Henry was also a member of Lemon Springs United Methodist Church. He loved old-time country music, especially the songs of Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn, and enjoyed nothing more than a good western movie. A devoted sports fan, he cheered faithfully for the Carolina Panthers, the North Carolina Tar Heels, and even the NC State Wolfpack. Above all, Henry was a proud and supportive father. His daughter was his world, and he encouraged her in every endeavor. He interacted with her friends throughout his life and enjoyed being with them. In his younger years, he enjoyed camping, riding motorcycles, hunting, and fishing. Henry had a special affinity for dogs, and they loved him. He enjoyed the companionship of Maggie May and Cassie in the past year.
Henry is survived by his daughter, Lisa Shearer (Rick) of Sanford; grandson, Logan Shearer (Sarah); great-grandchildren, Lexie and Dylan; nieces, Cindy Ashe (Harold) and Lora Kann (Steve); nephews, Terry Smith, Mike Smith (Linda), Jack Ball (Trina), and Jimmie Ball; and many great nieces and nephews.
A gathering for Henry will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 4, 2025, at Lemon Springs United Methodist Church, 7225 Lemon Springs Road, Sanford, NC 27332. Anyone wishing to share a Henry story is encouraged to do so. Anyone who cannot attend can have written thoughts read at the gathering.
