Diana Duncan Belvin, of West End, died November 11, 2025 at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst. She was 85.
She was born on May 5, 1940, in Schenectady, NY, to George Ferdinand Duncan and Mildred Ruth Queern. Through the years, Diana honed her artistic inclinations, eventually attending McGill University and the Rhode Island School of Design. During those times, she worked at Natural Stone Bridge & Caves and Frontier Town, both in New York’s Adirondacks.
While at Frontier Town, she met the man she knew she would marry, William (Bill) Charles Belvin. When she first saw him among a group of other cowboys, she noticed he had a cast on his leg, the result of a rodeo accident. But she still set her sights on him. “What was he going to do?” she asked. “He couldn’t run!”
When Diana and Bill married in 1960, they moved to Statesville, NC. The couple expanded their family with sons Bill and Bruce. While in Statesville, Diana put her artistic talent to good use, including restoring the chalk work on the interior wall at the historic Ebenezer Academy. The family was members of Bethany Presbyterian Church.
After moving to Pinehurst, Diana volunteered at Pinehurst Elementary School and became active in the PTA and Advisory Council, as her children attended Pinehurst schools. The family joined Community Presbyterian Church.
She found her niche, combining her love for reading with a strong, organized work ethic, when she joined Given Memorial Library, becoming library director. After serving for about eight years, she left to become a library technician at the Carthage branch of Moore County Library. She retired in 2010.
Diana was a talented photographer, achieving a notable reputation, especially at rodeo, team roping and barrel horse events, mostly 1999-2009. She was always pleased to see her photography on display at various sites, including rodeo events, restaurants and personal homes.
She was an avid reader, always having several books nearby. Diana loved RV camping, especially the family trips taken across the country. She enjoyed various crafts, along with Sudoku and online jigsaw puzzles.
Diana was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, after 58 years of marriage. She is survived by sons William (Bill) T. Belvin (Karen) of Woodleaf and Bruce S. Belvin (Creig) of Salisbury; grandchildren Leona Singley (Devin) of Holly Springs, Sawyer Campeotto (Michael) of Nashville, TN, and Samuel Belvin (Sophia) of New York City; great-granddaughters Emilia Singley, Lucie Campeotto, and Marlowe Campeotto; and sister Cornelia DeFranco of Summerville, SC.
She wanted to say “Many thanks to My Team”: Adrian, Stephanie, and Kimber Pickler, Jane Garrell of FirstHealth Hospice, Patti Bramblett, Kaye Davis Brown, Barbara Decker, and Kathy Prickett.
A graveside service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on December 4 at Cross Hill Cemetery in Carthage.
Memorials may be made to Diana’s favorite classical music station: WCPE, PO Box 828, Wake Forest, NC, 27588; or via https://theclassicalstation.org; or Blood Cancer United, PO Box 22324, New York, NY 10087, or via https://givenow.bloodcancerunited.org/.
While Diana had to deal with various forms of cancer for more than 25 years, she was adamant that she did not “battle cancer.” Saying simply, “I did what was necessary to live with it,” Diana refused to let it define her.
