Fred “Pop-Pop” Bethune Monroe, Jr., age 93, passed away peacefully at home on May 23, 2026. Born October 16, 1932, in Moore County, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Fred Bethune Monroe, Sr., and Lela Jane Fletcher Monroe of West End, North Carolina. Fred was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, and faithful Elder at Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church.

While growing up in West End, he helped his family run Monroe Distributing Company and the West End Theater in the 1940s, working in sales and as a projectionist. He graduated from West End High School and then attended North Carolina State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Wood Products Manufacturing.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army, serving on the rifle team and in the artillery at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Outside his work and education, Fred was known as a master craftsman, capable of building almost anything.  A connoisseur of tools, he applied his talents across architecture, construction, and facility management throughout his career.  He ultimately retired as Director of Facilities and Construction for the Fort Bragg School System.

Fred also had a deep love of the outdoors and enjoyed spending time in nature throughout his life, including fishing, hunting, and land surveying.

He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Carol Lee Hatton Monroe; his daughter, Jeanne Monroe Williams, of Aberdeen; his son, Douglas Monroe, and his wife, Nicole, of Carolina Beach; his brother, Dr. John L. Monroe, and his wife, Evelyn; and his cherished grandchildren, Cassi Williams Beech and husband, Josh; Zachary Williams and wife, Rebecca; Logan Williams and wife, Katherine; Cole Monroe; Maggie Monroe; and Emma Monroe. He is also survived by his beloved great-grandchildren, Laneya Williams, James Beech, and Lillian Beech, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Robbie and I send our thoughts and prayers to Fred’s family. He was very proud of his family heritage. We met Fred at the Old Scottish Gravesite outside of Carthage where he was very informative about the Monroe Family . He was excited about attending the Monroe Clan gatherings and visiting the Folis Castle in Sscotland. We keep in touch after our first meeting. He was a wonderful man and he will be greatly missed.

  2. John, I was sorry to learn of Fred’s death, but I appreciated reading about the good, full life he lived. A year or two ago Agnes and I went to a donor-appreciation event held by N. C. State’s forestry school. To my great surprise and delight, Fred recognized me from a distance and walked over to speak to us. I was amazed that, at his age, he had driven up to Raleigh from Moore County. My sympathy, Bob Auman

  3. Fred was a great neighbor and friend. Linda, my bride, and I, offer our prayers and condolance to Carol and the family. Fred was a member of our Brownson prayer breakfast group the 1st and third Tuesdays of the Month at the steak and eggs at 7 am. His brother told me me was not well and had lost weight. We made some potatoe soup and pureed it and I took it by and had a good visit and told him I had not been attending prayer breakfast because I had been sick but would be there Tuesday, and Fred was there, and we all had a great prayer and breakfast and Fred participated and everyone was inspired. God bless Fred, he was the best of us. Linda and Bill Hamel

  4. Doug, Nicole, Cole, Maggie, Emma and family you are in our thoughts and prayers at this time. Cindy and I have good memories of your dad when we would see him at your house in East Bend off Taylor Road

  5. Fred was always the same, wherever we saw him. He was a good friend and we only have good memories
of him, and those memories are from years back until present.
Sending love and our best to the family.
    Decatur and Betty

  6. Fred was my backyard neighbor, and over the years we shared many wonderful conversations at the fence. He helped me with countless things I didn’t have the skills or knowledge to do—there seemed to be nothing he couldn’t handle! Fred also had a special bond with my dog, Kuma. He would give Kuma treats at the fence and invite him over to sample blueberries from his bushes. Kuma always knew when Fred was in his shop and would “call” to him for his treat. Fred will be deeply missed. May God give comfort and peace to his family. Pamela Waugh

  7. So sorry for your loss. Fred was a good grandfather to my grandchildren and he will be missed. May God bless the family and b with them. RIP
