In 1955, he married Anita Louise Dehart, in Meridian, Miss., enroute to their new home in Montgomery, Al.  After discharge from the military they moved to Beckley, WV and started their family.

John was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing, hunting, gardening, golfing and any type of water activity.  He loved bluegrass and gospel music; “picking and grinning”

John lived most of his life in Beckley, WV until his retirement from Raleigh Ready Mix and Asphalt Company.   He moved to Charlotte, NC where he worked as a security guard for 3 years and then relocated to Robbins, NC for the last 25 years.

John ran a small business, repairing lawn mowers, golf carts, small planes, farm equipment and similar items.  John was liked by all and never met a stranger, loved attending area churches for revival and gospel singing.   He loved all his friends at Maness Music Barn.

John was all about looking out for widow ladies, single moms- helping them fixing cars, mowing grass, handyman work-he believed in helping others!

He loved God, his family, his church and his Country. He loved good food, family visits and reunions, time at Stephen Lake, Grandview, Sunday car rides, bird and squirrel watching and sitting on the front porch waving, as folks passed by.  Through the years friends and family said he looked like Clark Gable, Andy Griffin or Errol Flynn.

  1. What a kind and nice man! A true Southern Gentleman! He attended Calvary Baptist Church on several different occasions through out the past several years. I hated to hear of his failing health a couple of years ago. Family you have my prayers!

  3. Dear Joy and Family…. I am so sorry for your loss on this earth yet I rejoice for the gain in heaven. What peace and comfort comes when we realize that our separation from our precious ones is but for a season. Eternity awaits a reunion like no other. Praying for the comfort and peace of Christ to surround you in the journey forward. I know you will miss your Daddy in ways words can’t describe. Much love.

  4. My daddy!!! You were a ” Hero” to me in so many ways and I probably never told you!! You were the hardest working man I have ever known!! I always knew that if I ever really needed anything I could count on you!! I am proud to say you were my Dad!!! Everyone should know what a kind, God loving soul you had!!! This world will be a different place without you, but heaven has gained a wonderful angel!! Fly high Daddy!!! I love you!!!

  5. I can’t think about Uncle Johnny without remembering his smile. There isn’t one single time I can remember seeing him that he wasn’t grinning, and didn’t greet me or anyone else with a smile. I always loved your stories and nicknames, and remember how fearless you were when it came to anything outdoor related. I wish I was able to be there with the family you so loved to wish you farewell. I love you Uncle Johnny and I’m thankful Jane was there to welcome you home. ❤️
