John Scott Newton

John Scott Newton, Jr., age 65 of Southern Pines died Saturday (July 29, 2017) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
A memorial service will be 11:00 AM Wednesday at Community Congregational Church in Southern Pines conducted by The Rev. Mike Dobbs. A private burial will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Powell Funeral Home.
A native of Moore County he was a son of the late John Scott Newton and Nadine Everette Newton. Scott worked with Progress Energy for 32 years retiring as a line service supervisor. He loved working with children and spent many years working with Southern Pines Parks and Recreation coaching peewee football and Optimist baseball. He was also an avid deer hunter.
He was preceded in death by a brother Everett Newton.
He is survived by his wife Jane Blue Newton; daughter Laura Newton Ekram and husband Faisal of Bellevue, WA; sons John Gaines Newton of Asheboro and Daniel Madison Newton of Southern Pines; sisters and brothers Evelyn Gipson and husband Michael of Pinehurst, Charles Newton of Richmond, VA, Dennis Newton and wife Kris of Chesapeake, VA, Lisa Eubank of Wilmington, Carol Hess and husband Richard of Jackson Springs; two grandchildren Haris and Noah Ekram.
Memorials may be made to the Community Congregational Church, 141 North Bennett Street, Southern Pines, NC 23837 and Sandhills Optimist Club.

Jane, Laura, Daniel and John, I am so sorry to hear about Scott. He was always ready to help out anyone that needed help, loved his family, church and community. Laura he was so proud to have 2 grandsons – make sure they know what a wonderful man he was.
