Grammie was so many things to me it’s hard to fit them into a box. I got a lot of who I am today from her. We had physical distance in the end of her life but our heart and spirit were never disconnected. She taught me a thirst for learning. She demanded I never settle when I wanted more in my life. She taught me strength and courage at difficult times. She taught me how to dive into the details- her cooking had to be spot on, her quilts seamless, and her golfing used to frustrate her when she didn’t do well even on her good days. She loved her late husband “Tony†Garfield with all her heart. She loved animals, children, and heart was always in Maine at Toddy pond no matter how far she traveled or how long she lived in a place. She landed in Southern pines and that became her last residence and it was better for her in the winters long term but she always longed for her love of Toddy.
If I could leave some lasting memory here of my grandmother it would be: Never give up fighting for your authentic self, and don’t let ANYONE ever tell you you won’t amount to anything because you have to believe in yourself despite anyone else’s opinions. I love you GRAMMIE and I will always and forever be your only granddaughter.
Alicia Pearson
Ps. I did what I said I would do. Thank you for your guidance and encouragement not to settle. Your great grandchildren love you and will forever miss you too. Cody and River
