Ruth Horne Lineberry, 88, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 1, 2025, just a few short hours after her beloved husband, Billy Lineberry, at FirstHealth Hospice House.

A lifelong resident of Carthage, Ruth was the daughter of the late William Ernest and Margaret Wicker Horne. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Billy Lee Lineberry; son, Kenneth Lineberry; brothers, Bill, Glenn, and Wayne Horne; and sister, Louise Morrison.

Ruth dedicated many years of service as a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. She was a devoted member of Eureka Presbyterian Church, where she lovingly served as a Sunday School teacher, sharing her joy and patience with countless children over the years.  A woman of many talents and a gentle spirit, Ruth enjoyed reading, sewing, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who affectionately called her “Belle.” Her legacy of love, kindness, and faith will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew her.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Barbara Whitaker and her husband, Andy of Cameron; sister, Ann Douglas, of Carthage; three grandchildren, Matthew Whitaker (Emily), Reid Whitaker (LeeAnn), and Adam Lineberry (Kelsi); and four beautiful great-grandchildren, Amelia, Andrew, Kara, and Grady.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 4, 2025, at Eureka Presbyterian Church with Reverend John Baker officiating.  The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until service time at the church.  A joint burial with Ruth and Billy will take place following the service at Eureka Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

At all other times, the family will be receiving friends at the home of Barbara and Andy Whitaker, 1090 Bryant Road, Cameron, NC 28326.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Eureka Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, 2185 Farm Life School Road, Carthage, NC 28327.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. She was a special person who happened to be my Aunt, and a great Aunt she was. I will always remember her and the great memories she created. I loved her dearly

  2. So sorry about Ruth and Billy Lee. We have know them for many years. Praying GOD will comfort the family.
    Sincerely,
Eddie and Vetres Livengood and Veder Hurley

  3. I spent 4 years with Ruth and Billy Lee working on the farm for Spring Break pulling and setting tobacco plants and all summer into fall topping, priming, and sheeting. Those 4 short years with them gave me a lifetime of lessons, memories, and traditions that I have shared and passed down to my kids. Ruth would make me the BEST homemade chocolate milk and have it ready when I got to work in the mornings. My kids love it and both know how to make it. Homemade lunch where we all sat down together for some Super Burger!! A moonpie for snack that was heated up in the microwave for just 10 seconds and a good cold Pepsi to wash it down. To this day I attribute my “backing” skills to hooking up trailers and hoisting tobacco boxes in the barn with the tractor. I didn’t just work for them, they were family to me and always have been in my heart. I’m sad that they have left their earthly home but knowing that they went home together to our Lord warms my heart. I know Ruth wouldn’t want to spend one more minute than she had to without Billy Lee. My condolences and love to Barbara and Ann and the rest of the family.

  4. Mrs. Ruth was my Sunday school teacher for many years, as well as a family friend. She taught me so many Bible lessons and a love for Christ, she will be so missed. Sending prayers for all of her loved ones during this difficult time.

  5. Ruth and Billy (her husband), embodied kindness, gentleness, and love, cultivating a life of warmth and compassion.
Through their diligent efforts, farming their land with dedication, they not only nurtured their crops but also the spirits of many young people, including my sons, who were fortunate enough to work alongside them during a few summers.
Their kindness and generosity inspired a sense of gratitude and admiration in all who knew them. The couple’s selflessness and commitment to helping their neighbors, sharing fresh produce from their garden, left an indelible mark on their community.
Their legacy lives on through their remarkable daughter, Barbara, who shines brightly with her own brand of kindness and compassion. Losing both parents in such close proximity is undoubtedly a tremendous challenge, yet it’s heartening to know that Ruth and Billy departed in a manner that likely aligned with their own wishes.
May the love, prayers, and cherished memories of family and friends envelop Barbara and Andy, and the entire family, bringing solace and peace in this difficult time.
    Sincerely,
    Richard and Kathy Whitaker

  6. I have many special memories of Mrs. Ruth at Eureka church as a young girl. She was a sweet lady. She and Billy Lee were good friends of my mom and dad. Prayers and sympathy for their family. May God’s love and peace surround you all during this time of loss.
