William Terrell Webster Jr., 90, departed peacefully at his home in Southern Pines Friday, May 31, 2013.
A funeral and celebration of his life will be held at 3 pm, Sunday, June 16, in the Chapel of South Building, Penick Village Retirement Community, in Southern Pines. A light reception will follow at Penick, followed by a brief committal of ashes service in the Emmanuel Episcopal Church Memorial Garden, in Southern Pines.
He was born Oct. 2, 1922, in Gastonia, to William Terrell and Nettie Terrie Webster. Most of his long life was in North Carolina.
While a student at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill, his education was interrupted by the bombing of Pearl Harbor, after which he served during World War II in the Navy as a Lieutenant JG stationed on Guam in the Pacific.
Mr. Webster graduated from Carolina with a BS in commerce, followed by a law degree. He married Leila McKimmon, of Raleigh, in 1944.
Mr. Webster worked briefly as an attorney in Catawba County before assuming a position at Warlong Glove Company in Conover, which later became Riegel Textile Corporation. In addition to a long career in the textile business, which included Conover Glove, his entrepreneurial interests led to founding several manufacturing businesses. In later years, he moved to Southern Pines and Pinehurst and practiced law as a partner in the firm of Johnson, Poole, and Webster.
Terrell Webster is remembered as a loving husband and father who inspired his children to do their best, and he was a helpful friend to many others. He held leadership positions and taught adult Sunday School at Trinity Church in Conover, and later attended Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Southern Pines.
He was president of his local school board and a county commissioner in Catawba County. Mr. Webster was a longtime member and past president of Rotary and enjoyed traveling.
He is survived by one son and three daughters: Mary Hull Webster (William T. Wiley), of San Francisco, Leila McKimmon Webster. of Chapel Hill, Diane Terrie Webster (Richard Scanlan), of White Plains, N.Y., and Arthur (Pat) McKimmon Webster, of Atlanta. He is also survived by his brother, James Webster (Lola Webster), of Columbia, S.C.; and his granddaughter, Abigail Webster Scanlan, of White Plains, N.Y. In addition, nieces, nephews and children from the Tucker, Webster and Moehling families knew his unique spirit.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Leila McKimmon Webster; his son William (Bill) Terrell Webster III; and his second wife, Terry Moehling Webster.
Memorial donations may be made to Community Health Hospice, in Sanford.
