Dancing with David

David invited me to attend a UNC Chapel Hill dance with him during his freshman year. He hadn't made the acquaintance of many girls yet, and I was the younger sister of his brother's wife, Betty Lou (Mrs. Ed B. Bruton). I was a senior at Broughton High School in Raleigh, so it was relatively easy for him to collect and return me. I remember him as well-mannered, smart, appropriately attentive and a competent dancer. Well, average! But I was no Ginger Rogers. There was a concert before the dance; the internet says Louis Armstrong played for the spring dance, but I remember a mostly saxophone band. I want to say Mays, but can't pin it down. Very doo wop. So maybe this was homecoming, which makes more sense, because I'm betting that by spring, David knew plenty of girls! Rest in peace, David, and may the comfort of Christ rule in the hearts of your beautifully fathered children and your grieving wife.

I had the wonderful pleasure of being one of the first nurses to work with Dr Bruton when he began working at Moore County Hospital in 1966. I was the 3-11 head nurse on the pediatric unit just having gotten married and came back to work as a RN having worked there in high school. He was such a mentor to me as a young nurse. If a baby needed immediate attention all I had to do was call him. He would come so fast I worried about him getting a speeding ticket. Of course he was my kids doctor. Once when my daughter was very sick and my son not so bad he admitted them both to the hospital saying you can’t be in 2 places at once and your husband needs to work. He will always have a special place in my heart. God sure has a special angell
