Dancing with David

  1. David invited me to attend a UNC Chapel Hill dance with him during his freshman year. He hadn’t made the acquaintance of many girls yet, and I was the younger sister of his brother’s wife, Betty Lou (Mrs. Ed B. Bruton). I was a senior at Broughton High School in Raleigh, so it was relatively easy for him to collect and return me. I remember him as well-mannered, smart, appropriately attentive and a competent dancer. Well, average! But I was no Ginger Rogers. There was a concert before the dance; the internet says Louis Armstrong played for the spring dance, but I remember a mostly saxophone band. I want to say Mays, but can’t pin it down. Very doo wop. So maybe this was homecoming, which makes more sense, because I’m betting that by spring, David knew plenty of girls!

Rest in peace, David, and may the comfort of Christ rule in the hearts of your beautifully fathered children and your grieving wife.
