Margaret Lewis Cleetwood, age 89, died peacefully Thursday (December 6, 2012) at her home.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday at Carthage First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Rick Martindale and the Rev. Tom Currie officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall.
A native of Moore County she was the daughter of the late Coy Stephen Lewis and Elma Morrison Lewis. She was a graduate of Flora McDonald College (now St. Andrews College) where she was named 'May Queen' her senior year.
Margaret married Dr. Cleet C. Cleetwood in 1946 and enjoyed 60 years of marriage before his passing in 2007. She taught home economics and chemistry for many years and was very involved with many different church preschool programs. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church where she held many different offices and was given the Honorary Life Membership from the Presbyterian Women. She was an avid bridge player and was currently serving as president of the Pinehurst Chapter of the Southern Dames of America.
She was preceded in death by: a daughter, Suzanne Cleetwood; sisters, Patricia Lewis Stephens and Hazel Lewis McLaurin; and a brother, Coy Stephen Lewis, Jr.
Survivors include her daughters Lucinda Casey and husband, David of Carthage; Nancy Carter of Carthage and husband,. Nick of Martinsville; and a son John Cleetwood and fiance Amy Allen of Carthage; sister Betty Garner, of Robbins; four grandchildren, Chris Casey and wife, Mackenzie of Durham, Brian Casey and wife, Jeanna of Eagle Springs, Nicholas Cleetwood Carter and Caroline Suzanne Carter of Carthage; and five great-grandchildren, Will & Troy Casey of Durham and Sophie, Kate & Allie Casey of Eagle Springs.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church building fund, P.O. Box 397, Carthage, NC 28327.
