Ann Richardson Dowd Medlin of West End passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 4, 2024 at her home.
Born on October 4, 1946, she was a daughter of the late Eva Richardson Dowd and Robert Peter Dowd II. She was born in Pinehurst at what then was called Moore Memorial Hospital. Ann grew up in Southern Pines and attended Southern Pines School. Her first year of college was at Western Carolina University. After her first year, she returned home to attend Sandhills Community College as they were adding a nursing program. Ann was a member of the first graduating class of nursing students. She had a calling for nursing and through the years she spent her time caring for her patients at Moore Memorial which later became FirstHealth of the Carolinas. Nursing was her career but she also loved animals and there are many, many rescue pets who got lucky to be loved by Ann.
When Ann retired, she stayed busy with numerous volunteer jobs, one of which was being a nurse at the spay and neuter clinic.
Ann’s gifts of caring weren’t limited to people and animals, she also had a natural innate talent with plants and gardening. She could take in any dying plants and bring them back to life. One of her biggest accomplishments was having over 100 Camellia plants at the farm.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her in laws: Andrew and Bonnie Medlin; brother: Johnny Dowd; brother in law: Harold Medlin; sisters in laws; Susan St Onge and Rosa Lee Medlin; nephews: Ben Dowd and Luke Dowd.
Ann is survived by her husband: Robert Medlin; children: Jeremy Medlin (Tara) and Robin Mosso (KC); siblings: Pete Dowd (Julia), Neil Dowd (Tara), Harriet Wicker (Jerry), Tommy Dowd; and her many pets: Daisy, Tucker, Sarah, Edwina Blessings, Pretty Girl, Eleanor and Sunny.
A celebration of life will be held on October 4, 2024 (her birthday) at 2:00 pm at her home in West End.
The family asks that donations be sent to FirstHealth Hospice in lieu of flowers.
