Minister Betty Jean Gibson, 78, passed away Monday, September 28, 2026 at First Health Hospice in West End, NC, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on December 3, 1947 in Iberville, LA to the late Willis Randall Sanders and Ruby Ann Landix. Later in life Betty married Jeffery Gibson and they enjoyed several years of happiness together. After moving to North Carolina, she found and made First Missionary Baptist Church her spiritual home. And under the spiritual leadership and guidance of Pastor Joshua Haire, Betty was ordained Minister Betty J. Gibson of Palliative Care. She loved the Lord with all of her heart and would often share this love with others in need.
Betty was a fun, caring, thoughtful and strong woman of faith. She set the example for her children that anything was possible and the words “I can’t” were not an option. Although her love for her children and family was everything, she was loved by many. She worked for over 20 years as an Executive Secretary with Chase Manhattan Bank.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Jeffrey Gibson and parents, Willis and Ruby Sanders; brothers, Willis Jr Percy, Jerry Lee, Charles, Kenneth, Nathaniel and Louis; great-grandson, Keyon.
She is survived by her seven children, Valerie, Jessie(Arthur), Herman(Marylin), Alithea (Lacey), Sherri, Charles(Kimberly) and David (Kenita); one sister, Gladys and two brothers, Murray and Michael. She also leaves to cherish her precious grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
A Homegoing Celebration will be held at 3:00 pm on Friday, October 9, at First Missionary Baptist Church, 315 S. Gaines St, Southern Pines. A visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Pastor Joshua Haire will be officiating the service.
