Bobby Wayne Maness

Bobby Wayne Maness, 87, of Seagrove, North Carolina, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday evening, March 8, 2025.

Born on January 3, 1938, in High Falls, North Carolina, to the late Taft and Ola Maness, Bobby had an infectious smile and love of laughter. He was a Godly man who loved  the Lord and his family deeply. He set an enduring example for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Bobby met the love of his life, Betty, during a senior bus trip to Washington, DC. At the first rest stop, he charmed her by offering a Dr Pepper, and their love story began. They married on October 12, 1957, and celebrated sixty-six years of marriage in 2023. Together, they created a home filled with love, laughter, and endless support. Bobby faithfully cared for Betty after her dementia diagnosis, exemplifying a kind and loving relationship until her passing.

A proud father of five, Bobby instilled values of kindness and humility in his children. His deep faith and love for the Lord were the guiding lights for his family.

Bobby’s career began with Seaboard Railroad in Southern Pines, NC, and he later worked for over forty years as a lab engineer with Energizer Battery Company in Asheboro, NC. His unparalleled work ethic ensured the comfort and security of his beloved family.

In his twenties, Bobby began directing the church choir at Union Grove Baptist Church in Seagrove. He was a founding member of Victory Baptist Church in 1983, serving as minister of music for over thirty years. In retirement, he continued his ministry at Balfour Baptist Church in Asheboro. Bobby also led various gospel quartets and church choral workshops throughout the area. An avid reader, Bobby read through the Bible several times and was attempting to read it once more before his passing. He had a passion for music, especially gospel quartet music, and faithfully played the piano daily. He also loved watching Tar Heels basketball and St. Louis Cardinals baseball, rarely missing a game. Bobby stayed active throughout his life, enjoying gardening, working in the yard, and tinkering in his workshop while listening to music. Bobby will be dearly missed by family and friends. His family was his pride and joy, and his greatest role was being a Papaw to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 15, 2025, from 1:30-2:45 at Victory Baptist Church in Seagrove, followed by a service to celebrate his life at 3:00 in the sanctuary.

In addition to his parents, Bobby was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty, and four siblings. He is survived by his children: Terry Maness (Lori), Randy Maness (Martha), Pamela Wilkie (Jim), Barron Maness, and Derwin Maness (Tracy); grandchildren: Philip Maness (Kasey), Brandon Maness, Ashley Allred (Matt), Brad Maness (Heather), Chad Maness, Jordan Maness, and Ben Maness; great-grandchildren: Brianna Maness, Caden Maness, and Andy Maness; sisters: Carolyn Bunnell and Sylvia Gibbons; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Victory Baptist Church, P O Box 470, Seagrove, NC 27341.

    • I met this great man and
his family back in the early 80’s I met them through my best friend till this day , their son Derwin. Mr and Mrs Maness created the blueprint of how to raise a family. They showed love, kindness and structure . They instilled these qualities in all of their children. He will be truly missed, but I know his family will have his memory last a lifetime. Much love. Your friend, John Sawyer

Prayers sent to the family in your time of grieving.
Bobby was the example all fathers should follow.

  2. Uncle Bobby and daddy (Gene) are together now. I am sure they are catching up and discussing the up coming ACC Tournament. Two great men that are missed, yet they have left testimonies that will last for generations.

    We love you!!

  6. Bobby was a best friend for over 40 plus years. We got to know and become friends at Energizer Battery company. We would take breaks and have lunch together and have talks about our families and the Lord Jesus. Once Bobby retired we kept in touch with phone calls and an occasional lunch. I will miss our talks but the one think we talked about was this day of meeting the Lord or going home, our eternal home and he was looking with anticipation because he was ready, he ran the coarse faithfully like no other I know, therefore laid up for him are treasures I can’t imagine. He loved Jesus and his family with an unmeasurable love. I loved him, he loved me and we both knew it and really appreciated one another. I will see him again and that smile. Thank you Jesus. ❤️

  7. Barron, I am sorry to hear of your Father’s passing. Please know that you and your family are in my prayers.

  8. I am deeply saddened to learn of Bobby’s passing. I had only met Bobby once, but it was clear that he loved and was deeply loved. Isn’t that what we are called to do is love others? One meeting was a blessing. I am also blessed to have known his youngest son, Derwin, for over 20 years. An amazing man. A reflection of his loving family. I hope you rejoice in all the wonderful memories and find comfort in knowing he is now at home with the Lord and his loving bride who preceded him. Continued prayers.
