Claudette Thompson Viltz, affectionately known as Mimi, 94, of Pinehurst, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2026, surrounded by family.
Born on January 11, 1932, in Luthersville, Georgia, Claudette was the daughter of Ernest and Josephine Thompson. She spent most of her life in Atlanta, lived briefly in Florida, and eventually returned to her hometown of LaGrange, Georgia, before passing in North Carolina—leaving behind a life filled with love, roots, and quiet strength.
Claudette’s fun-loving and witty personality was ever-present. She was an avid writer, whether jotting thoughts in her journal, creating a poem, or writing to friends and family. She enjoyed bowling and proudly displayed her league trophy for earning a High Series Handicap. She was also a talented seamstress who could sew and tailor just about anything she touched.
Claudette loved to travel, with Europe and Maine at the top of her list. As much as she enjoyed seeing new places, nothing delighted her more than cooking. She constantly discovered delicious new recipes that caught her eye and tempted her adventurous palate.
Above all, Claudette cherished her family and friends. She will be remembered for her charming, sunny demeanor, her quick wit, and her ability to talk for hours about every topic under the sun.
Claudette was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Ernest and Josephine Thompson, and her daughter, Kathie Gilpin.
She is survived by her son, Philip Goggans; daughter, Kristie Barksdale; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
