Clyde Maness

clyde maness

Clyde Roger Maness,80, passed away Sunday July 31, 2022.

Clyde was born November 6, 1941 in Moore County to the late Kennie and Annie Wallace Maness.   He was a  poultry farmer and operated Maness Saw and Mower for many years. The family also operated Maness Pottery.  He was a guitar and bass musician, who loved Bluegrass music and people. Clyde began hosting Maness Pottery and Music Barn, in Carthage, on Tuesday nights. The musical gatherings started in his home in 1974. With many musicians eager to pick with one another, the sessions outgrew his house, so Maness moved the musical gathering across the road to his family’s pottery shop. This family style gathering was popular to musicians and to bluegrass fans. Multiple jams typically form throughout the sprawling enclosures. Gradually, these groups, some seasoned bands, others impromptu, take to the stage located in the back of the building to perform a few tunes for the listeners who gather for fellowship and pot luck food. The gathering was the feature of many magazine articles and television interviews. Bluegrass musicians of all ages and experience loved to play at the music barn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 3 infant siblings; brothers: Donnie Maness, James Paul Maness; sisters: Bonnie Faulkner, Gertrude Duguay.

Clyde is survived by his wife of 62 years, Edna Seawell Maness; children: Jackie Maness, Lisa Mackey, Suzanne Maness, Timmy Maness; grandchildren: John Garrison, II (Chelsea), Sierra Roybal (Donavan), Chelsey Monroe, Jacob Upchurch, Dustin Maness, Nathan Maness, Ethan Maness;  great grandchildren: Ayden, Logan, Emma; siblings: Judy Moore, Dorothy Boudoin, Leroy Maness, Johnny Maness, David Maness; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral service will be 2 PM, Thursday  August 4, 2022 at Victory Community Baptist Church, with Dr. Bill Maness and Reverend Bryan Maness officiating.  Burial will follow in the Wallace Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM, Wednesday, August 3, 2022 at Kennedy Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Maness Music Barn, ℅ Edna Maness, 10995 NC Hwy 24/27, Carthage, NC, 28327.

  20. My sincere condolences to Clyde’s family and his family of friends. He was always welcoming when I went to the music barn and I enjoyed hearing his stories of the past about life around Robbins. He remembered my parents and was able to tell me heart warming stories about them. I only met Clyde after they passed on, but remember both my parents speaking fondly of him. We’ve lost a very good man, a friend to all and a legend in his own time. I’ll bet he’s still enjoying music and being reunited with family and friends he hasn’t seen in a while. Rest in peace Clyde, you will be greatly missed.

  21. I met Clyde at about time a retired from the principalship. I began making a weekly Tuesday trip to his home where
great music was being played in his living room. As time went my we outgrew the living room and moved over to his
pottery accross the hightway. I was there about every Tuesday. then we built the music room on the rear of the
pottery. I spent many weeks helping. We designed and installed the ‘Herringbone” paneling around the stage.

My help with the building and my beginning to pick a little lead to my lasting friendship with Clyde. There will
be a void in Tuesday nights for me for a long time. We will all miss you, Clyde

    Rest in peace!!! Jim Brock

A true legend in the Bluegrass world and a well respected musician. I as well as many others were inspired to be a better musician and human being by having fellowship with Mr. Maness. He leaves a great legacy and a void that cannot be filled. He will be greatly missed. May God cradle you all in His loving arms in your grief and in the days to come. We love you. Kim and Bruce Williams

  24. A truly sweet wonderful man that loved people and I loved talking to him when he went to visit at pine lake, he was one of the sweetest people in the world and he surely will be missed, God bless his family and his multitude of friends

  25. We have lost a true legend in the Bluegrass world. As soon as you walked into the music barn on Tuesdays he always greeted us with a hearty hello and maybe a story . Clyde was good friends with my late husband, Danny Coleman who played there on occasion. When we would leave he always invited Danny back. What we had at Clyde’s was pure friendly , bluegrass players and singers gathering for a good clean time, food, music and singing ! I never felt afraid there because we all aren’t that way. I don’t know if any other place in this area like Clyde’s. Hopefully Mrs Maness can keep it going, may not be free but I’m sure we can all give a few bucks to keep going !My deepest condolences to his family, friends and everyone who visited the Music Barn !

  26. So sorry to hear of Clyde’s passing. He was a fun person to know such a character. Prayers for the family.
