Cynthia “Cindy” Israel Gregory
March 25, 1956 – August 12, 2024
Cynthia “Cindy” Israel Gregory, 68, of Carthage passed away on August 12, 2024 following a long, hard-fought battle with cancer. Cindy was a beloved wife, sister, stepmom, grandmother, aunt, and friend who will be greatly missed.
Cindy was born in Guilford County and grew up in High Point, NC where she attended Ledford High School before moving to Greensboro to work as a veterinary technician and then to Carthage, where (after working as an assistant for another veterinarian and as a dental officenassistant) she co-founded Cin-Lar Kennels in 1985 and ran it with her husband until retiring in 2019.
A gentle and loving person, Cindy was a great and true friend to many – fiercely loyal and always there with a smile or shoulder for any who needed it. As big as her heart was in her relationships with friends and family, it was perhaps matched by her love of animals. From a young age, Cindy was enchanted by horses, riding her stick-pony in her cowboy outfit and dreaming of having a real one to ride. When she moved to Carthage, she finally got a horse of her own and could often be found riding it through the woods in the area. Along with her husband, she was an accomplished trail rider, winning multiple awards from the North American Trail Ride Conference atop Babe, her favorite horse.
Animals of all kinds were special to Cindy and her care and passion for their well-being was so obvious that Cin-Lar Kennels became a great favorite for clients (and cats and dogs) throughout the Sandhills area, who formed long-lasting relationships with the kennel and with Cindy. After spending 35 years caring for cats, dogs, birds, and almost every other type of small animal in the area’s pet population, Cindy retired only when her health made it too difficult to continue. There was never a day when Cindy wasn’t surrounded by furry and feathered friends, and it was a dream come true for her.
Cindy was a well-loved “mom” to her two stepsons and a doting aunt to her nephews. Family was always very important to Cindy, who never forgot a birthday and always made sure each and every family member felt special. Cindy is survived by her husband, Larry Gregory; her stepsons, Corey Gregory (Pamela Ward) and Darren Gregory; her step-grandchildren Bryce Gregory, Kendall Gregory, and Briar Gregory; her sister, Becky Mitchell (David); her nephews, James Mitchell (Toni) and David A. Mitchell; her grand-niece Callee Mitchell; and her grand-nephew, Levi Mitchell. She was preceded in death by her mother, Bessie “Dean” Brun; father, James Albert Israel; step-father, Bob Brun; and step daughter-in-law, Jennifer Gregory.
There will be a private, family memorial. Cindy was very appreciative of her care during her illness and donations to the American Cancer Society are suggested in lieu of flowers.
Fry & Prickett Funeral Home is assisting the Gregory family.
I am so sad to hear of her passing. I loved taking my dogs over there. I never worried about them while I was away and very saddened when they had to close. She was such a sweet, compassionate lady. My sincere sympathy to all of her family.
Cindy was a big part of my life in the years after I moved into my house in Carthage. I had many dogs and cats who were part of a former rescue group. She always solved any problem while I was disposing of a house in another state.
She accommodated me, was reasonable and I would not have made it without her. I shall miss her. Larry was always there for me.
So sad to read this. Prayers for Larry and the family. May God give you strength, peace and comfort.
Becky Mitchell
My sister, my best friend. I am so thankful to have had her in my life. It is going to be difficult being without her, but I know she is free of sickness & pain & looking down from heaven with our mom & dad. Until we see each other again! 😘
Becky, I am so sorry for you and your family to hear of Cindy’s death. I reached out to her for advice several years ago for help on rescue breeds that might make good service dogs. She had such a special knowledge of dog breeds and temperaments that was vital in my selection of Bailey; a boxer/beagle mix. For my service dog. I can’t imagine the loss you are feeling. I can say I might understand it some after losing my little brother Chuck last year, but I suspect you sisters were much closer than Chuck and I. Continued prayers for you, David and the kids.
