September 29, 1939 ~ January 12, 2022

Born in: Beckley , WV
Resided in: Southern Pines, NC

Donald Robert Calfee “Don” passed away peacefully January 12, 2022 with his wife and three children by his side.  Don is survived by his wife Nettie, three children (Ben, Aimee and Robert) and granddaughter Summer.

Don was a loving brother, husband, father and grandfather; honorable Navy veteran; and charismatic leader instrumental in building tourism in Moore County.  His family and friends cherished him for his positive attitude, generosity and sense of humor.  His relationship with Christ deepened as he aged, and it was through the verse by verse study of the Word in Ron Walter’s Bible study that gave him greater understanding of the scriptures and love for the Lord.  He was an active member of Christ Community Church.   His love of the Lord was a bright light that served as a steadfast example to all of the lives he touched.

Don was born in Beckley, WV in 1939 and grew up with his 2 sisters Gloria Martin and Nancy Calfee.  After receiving a major in Business Administration from Berea College, he took on his first job as the general manager of the Tapoco Lodge in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina from 1962-64.  When duty called during the Vietnam War, he enlisted in the Navy and served as a Signals Officer and Security Officer to the Admiral of the USS Bennington from 1964 – 67.  After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he returned to his post at the Tapoco Lodge, where he met his wife Nettie of 52 years.

In 1973, with wife Nettie and son Ben, Don moved his new family to Southern Pines where daughter Aimee and son Rob were later born.  There he became the General Manager and Partner of the Sheraton Inn (later to become the Holiday Inn). He grew the hotel to a thriving business and received the “Manager of the Year” award twice from the Sheraton Corporation and “Small Business Person of the Year” (1996). He was instrumental in developing tourism in NC through multiple posts including President of the NC Hotel and Motel Association and Founder and President of the Southern Pines Hotel Association.   After retirement, he continued to share his passion by becoming a professor of hospitality at the Sandhills Community College.

Don was passionate about boating and sailing, and loved to travel, cook and read.  But most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his wife and children.  His family and friends are immensely grateful for the gift of his love and “one of a kind” charisma, and his legacy will live on in their hearts forever.

Funeral services will be 2:00pm Saturday, January 15, 2022 in the Ridge Building at Christ Community Church. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1:00. Burial will follow with military honors at Bethesda Cemetery.

  6. January 15. 2022
Dear family, as the older sister of Donald Robert Calfee(also known as Donnie boy, Un-kul Don, brother
and Chee). I want to express gratitude to God and our parents Talmage D Calfee and Ann Louise( Evans)
Calfee for bringing into my life such a dear, fun loving, helpful and funny brother. I am saying this
from a curious place of the mixture of sorrow and joy. The sorrow is an understandable part of earthly
life. I am missing and will miss my brother and know that his wife and children are without him now.
The joy part, however, is easy. He is at peace, and I understand that as a family we have been blessed
in countless ways and our dad taught us how to climb on the bumps when they appeared. I am grateful
to you Nettie. Ben. Aimee and Robert for the way you have enriched Don ‘s life, bringing smiles and new
perspectives and I am grateful for your loving care these last days. Thank you. My heart is with you.

  8. Dear Nettie, I am so sorry to hear of Don’s passing. I so enjoyed watching the video and seeing all the pictures from your younger years before I knew y’all, to the years Mark and I were together and beyond. Please accept my deepest condolences and know that I’ll be praying for you and the family. It’s amazing how time passes and life moves forward. Take care! Love to you all!!

  9. To The Family of Donald Calfee,

On behalf of the members of the USS BENNINGTON PACT, please accept our condolences on the passing of your loved one.
We “thank you” for Don’s service to God & Country. Please know that our thoughts and prayers go out to the family during this
most difficult time. Gone from us, but remembered always, Don’s name shall be read from a listing of those shipmates that have passed and
in August of this year in Bennington, VT, at our actual ship’s bell, it will toll in his memory during our annual memorial wreath laying ceremony.

  10. I met Don in 1977 and went to him several times for business advice. He was always so generous with his time-always so calm and collected. Always provided the Sheraton for events like the United Way annual year end celebration. He will be missed. Nettie, you are in our thoughts and prayers. Ron and Wanda
