Douglas “Doug” Eugene Forrest was a devoted husband, father, and “Grimps” to his family. He passed away at home on Tuesday, April 16, 2024.
Doug was born to Clyde and Josephine Forrest on May 31, 1932. At the age of 17 he joined the United States Air Force where he proudly served as Staff Sergeant during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Greenland as a member of the Weather Service. He remained the family weatherman for the rest of his life, even predicting the weather for the evening he passed. Following his discharge from the military, Doug returned home and had a successful career in poultry, at one time recognized as the top breeder in his division. Many in the community also remember him as a driver for Moore County Transportation.
Doug was survived by his wife, Rebecca. They would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this summer. Together, they had two children Debbie Purvis (Charles) and Philip Forrest (Sherry) of Carthage, grandchildren Ian Purvis (Leslie), Carla Neal (Adam), Jeremy Forrest (Lauren), and Jesica Muse (Michael), and great-grandchildren Beckett, Emsley, Declan, Owen, Allen, and Elliott. Additionally, he has two living brothers, Roger and Ted (Helen). He is also lovingly remembered by many cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and other siblings.
The family has only fond, special memories of Grimps. In recent years he particularly enjoyed his time gardening, watching the kids play sports, and fishing at his brother Roger’s pond. To know Grimps was to love him. He never spoke a harsh word and cared for his family with concern, devotion, and kindness. He had a strong desire for all to know and love the Lord, which he demonstrated through his faithfulness as a Christian and his service to others over the years. The example and lessons he taught his family will carry on for many years to come. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
The family will receive guests from 2:00-3:00PM on Sunday, April 21st, at Glendon Independent Christian Church. A service will follow at 3:00PM, officiated by Rev. Nathan Hinson.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Glendon Independent Christian Church in his honor.
