Ernest Lane Carter, retired sheriff of Moore County, born July 25, 1957, passed away on the morning of Thursday, May 14, 2020.
Lane served as Elder at Cypress Springs Presbyterian Church and was a life-long Master Mason and Shriner. Lane was a dedicated public servant, husband, father, grandfather, mentor and friend. Anyone who had the good fortune to spend time with Lane was left better for it.
Lane is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Lee and Nancy Lane Carter, and his sister, Susan Sowder. He leaves behind his wife, Anita Cameron Carter; daughter, Dana Carter Hendrick (Heath Hendrick); sons, Brent (Sara Carter), Seth; and Ethan Carter; godson, Brock Holder (London Holder); eight grandchildren; siblings, Marsha Williams, Cindy Bullock and, Tim Carter (Melody Carter); a host of nieces and nephews; and countless others whose lives he touched.
The family appreciates the compassion and well-wishes of the community during this time of loss. Considering current social-distancing protocols, a public viewing will be held at Cypress Springs Presbyterian Church from Noon-2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, followed by a private family service at 3:00 p.m.
Following the service, a public graveside ceremony will be held with full law-enforcement honors.

Lane Carter was one of the most extraordinary individuals that our family ever knew. He was concerned about his fellowman and did his very best to improve the lives of others. As a law enforcement officer and as our Sheriff, he set the highest of standards and there was no one better – anywhere. He was a devoted family man and he lived by an exemplary code of conduct. The world is better for Lane having been a part of it and his life was a treasured gift to others. With gratitude for his life and with prayers for the many, many people who mourn his passing.
Lane was a great person and loved by many our thoughts and prayers go out to Anita and all the family. He wil be greatly missed by many.May God Bess all of you.
Anita, I am so sorry for your lost. Words can not express the sadness in my heart for you and the rest of your family. I have lost a brother, and a dear friend in Lane’s passing. He was one of the best and was always willing to help anyone anyway he could. I will cherish the many memories he and I shared. May God continue to bless you and the childern and grands.

As his older cousin, I can still see him, dressed as one of the 3 Kings in the Christmas play at Cameron school. He was singing “We 3 Kings of Orient Are” as he marched in with his deep voice and his little self.

I met Lane while I worked for Moore County he always was very friendly and was interested in what you had to say. I was most impressed when Lane chased me down in the parking lot after leaving the Sheriff’s office to give his condolences for the passing of my Daddy. His family are in my thoughts and prayers.

I met Lane when I started attending Cypress Church. My favorite memories of him were of his singing and playing guitar with the Gospel Boys. They did so much for others bringing church to nursing homes. They also contributed so much to the fun and fellowship that we have at Cypress.
Anita is in my thoughts and prayers. No time is the right time to lose someone, but the experience must be so much harder when others must keep their distance.

Rick and I were so heartbroken to hear of Lane’s passing. He was a good man who was devoted to his family and law enforcement. Praying for my lifetime friend, Anita, who was his loving wife and caregiver, and all of their children and grandchildren in the days to come.
Anita, please know that you and your entire family are in my prayers during this time of great sorrow. Lane (Pa) will be greatly missed but what a blessing he was to so many during his life.
