Eva Barber Dowd, 92, of Pinehurst, died at FirstHealth of the Carolinas Friday, May 12, 2017.

She was born April 9, 1925 in Carthage to the late Braxton and Mittie Frye Barber. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Grossett Dowd; sisters, Betty Brown, Mable Moore, Margaret White; and a brother, James Barber.

  Eva and her husband owned and operated C. Louis Meyer Nursery in Pinehurst for over 60 years until their retirement. She was an avid gardener and was well known for the beautiful flowers and plants that she grew.

Eva was a registered nurse working as a head floor nurse, emergency nurse, and worked in obstetrics and gynecology at Moore Regional Hospital for 15 years, retiring from there and going into private duty nursing for 25 years.

  Eva will be dearly missed by all who were touched by her generous spirit. She is remembered with love by her sons, Henry (Hank) Grossett Dowd Jr. (Marie McCaskill Dowd) of Carthage and William Calvin Dowd, of Pinehurst; a granddaughter, Carol Leigh Dowd-Kamalbake (Rahmean), of Southern Pines; a grandson, Patrick Henry Dowd, of Carthage; and a great-grandson, William Brothers Leander, of Elizabethtown.

Visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m. Monday, May 15, 2017, with the funeral service following at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church, 1838 Bethlehem Church Road, Carthage NC 28327. Memorials may be made to the church in Eva’s name.
