Frank W. Buchan
October 1, 1921 ~ February 24, 2015
Frank Walker Buchan, 93, native son of Southern Pines, died Tuesday, February 24, 2015.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Community Congregational Church (141 North Bennett Street) in Southern Pines.
Born October 1, 1921, to the late Frank and Helen Buchan, he was preceded in death by his sister, Kathryn Whitlock.
A World War II veteran, Buchan was well-known throughout the community after serving nearly three decades as a clerk in the downtown Southern Pines post office. A lifelong follower of UNC athletics, he was instrumental in the growth of Little League baseball in the Sandhills and helped develop what is now known as Optimist (baseball) Park on Morganton Road. Buchan generously donated land that benefitted multiple churches in West Southern Pines as well as a piece of land that serves as part of the playground for what is now known as Southern Pines Primary School.
Buchan is survived by his wife, Carolyn, his partner in marriage for 67 years; six children – Ann, Lynda (spouse, Galen Harris), Pete (Cathy), Donna, Amy (David Seward) and Dean; 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
The family has designated the Boys & Girls Club of the Sandhills should friends desire to make a memorial contribution in lieu of flowers.
