Gladys Florence Smith King, 91, died June 22, 2009 at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday June 29, 2009 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church with Monsignor Jeffrey Ingham as Celebrant. Burial will follow in Bethesda Cemetery.
Born July 8, 1917 in Buffalo, NY she was a daughter of the late Philip N. and Rosa Schulenberg Smith and wife of the late Joseph E. King. She is survived by her daughter Sally K. Presti, and was preceded in death by a son, Peter.
Mrs. King received her B.A from the University of Buffalo in 1939, her M.A. from University of Cincinnati in 1940, Ph D. (Laws fellow in physics) in 1942; postgraduate (Adam T. Bruce Post doctorate fellow biology), from Johns Hopkins from 1942-1943, was a Histologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in New Orleans from 1943-1948, was a marine biochemist at the University of Miami in Sarasota, FL from 1948-49, was an associate chemist at the University of Honolulu from 1949-1958, was an associate professor at Chaminade College in Honolulu in 1958-1959.
During 10 years in Washington, DC she was a research associate at George Washington University from 1961-1970, was a professor of biology in 1967, was a Sigma Xi Research grantee from 1963-1964, from 1967-1968 was a fellow A.A.A.S., was a member of the American Institute of Biology Scientists, the American Society of Zoologist, American Micros. Society, and Sigma Xi. Contributed articles to tech journals on research of plant histochemitry and plant growth substances, cytochemistry of kidneys of Rana pipiens capable of spontaneous tumors.
