Gladys Thomas Marion, age 92 of Carthage died Tuesday (March 18, 2014) at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Friday at Carthage United Methodist Church where she was an active member for many years. The Rev. Mattheue Locklear will be officiating. Entombment will follow in the Cross Hill Cemetery Mausoleum.

 

She was born in Lee County to the late Stacy and Irene Gaster Thomas. Mrs Marion came to Carthage in the late 1940's to teach school and met Luke L. Marion, Jr. They were married in 1951 and enjoyed 50 wonderful years together.

 

Mrs. Marion received her B.S. Degree in Education from Asheville College where she served as vice -president of the Student Body. She was also awarded membership into the National Honor Society "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges."

 

She was a dedicated teacher for 40 years, with an evident love for children. After her retirement in 1985 she was caregiver for her husband who died in 2001. She pursued her love for art by attending Sandhills Community College and was able to achieve a degree of success in water color painting.

 

She was preceded in death by a brother Edwin Thomas.

 

She is survived by three sons: Luke L. Marion, III and wife Joan of Winston Salem, Keith Marion and wife Camie of Southern Pines, Scott Marion and wife Debbie of Clemmons; sisters Hazel Thomas Simmons and Myrtle Lula Thomas; brother Wilbur Thomas; four grandchildren Luke IV, Travis Lee, Molly Kate and Russell Thomas; two step-grandsons Connor and Zackary.

 

The family will receive friends at Fry and Prickett Funeral Home in Carthage on Thursday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 PM and other times at the home.
