Howard Leon Matthews, age 86, died September 24, 2018 at his home in Carthage NC.  Leon was born March 14, 1932 in Moore County, and was the son of Gracie Michael Matthews and William Howard Matthews. 
 He was a graduate of Farm Life High School in 1950, and served in the US Army during the Korean War.  He was a farmer and a real estate developer. He owned and enjoyed motorcycles until the last years of his life, and could be seen riding his 3 wheeler with his faithful, 4 legged companion, Sassy, the miniature poodle in the rear seat. Another of his favorite hobbies was operating his heavy equipment, with which he built many roads and ponds.  He and his wife Margaret were members of the Carolina Cardinals Camping Club.  They made many friends and memories motor homing across the United States.  
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.  Leon was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife of 55 years, Margaret Williams Matthews. He is survived by his sister , Barbara Matthews,  his children, Denise Bennett and husband, Hammond, son, Kenneth Matthews, and grandchildren,  Seth Bennett, and Gracen Bennett Holms,  Jessica Matthews, and his very special friend, Marie Stutts..
There will be a private memorial at a later date..
Memorials donations made be made to First Health Hospice Foundation, Pinehurst, NC. 
Arrangements entrusted to Fry and Prickett Funeral Services, Carthage, NC.
