Howard Shields Muse of Southern Pines passed away on Saturday, March 19 th at the FirstHealth Hospice in Pinehurst NC.  Mr. Muse, 73, succumbed to complications from cancer.  Born in New York City, he has lived in North Carolina for fifty years.  He was the son of the late Howard and Helen Singleton Muse of Southern Pines.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, April 9 at the Carolina Hotel from 2 to 5.  The family invites those who knew Howard to join them at that time.

 

Mr. Muse was a graduate of the University of Virginia and had a Master’s degree in history from the University of Georgia.  He completed all course work for a doctorate in American history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Working as a tree farmer, he planted many acres in pines and rejoiced in their growth.

Howard Muse avocations included the study of Moore County history as well of sustainable forestry practices in the Sandhills.  He was continually doing work and research in these areas. Over the years he wrote some award winning articles for local publications.

He is survived by his sister, Virginia Muse Fleischman and her husband, Edward, of Washington, DC.  He was a devoted uncle to Emily Elizabeth Muse of Alameda, California and her children, Zayden Allen Muse and Sukhi Skye Muse; and Matthew Edward Fleischman of Winchester, Virginia and his daughter, Rachel Elizabeth Fleischman.

In lieu of flowers the family has request that donations be made to the Moore County Historical Association, 110 West Morganton Road, Southern Pines NC 28387
