James 'J. W.' William Elliott, Jr. age 86 died Friday, August 13, 2010.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday (8/16/2010) at the First Presbyterian Church in Carthage with the Rev. Rick Martindale and Elder Calvin Harward officiating. Burial will follow at Lamms Grove Primitive Baptist Cemetery.
A native of Moore County he was the son of the late James William Elliott, Sr. and Roxie Key Elliott. He worked in Sanford during World War II making airplane parts for the military. After farming for several years, he served as a mail carrier and postal clerk with the Carthage Post Office for 30 years. During his postal career, two friends remained close to him, Tommy McKenzie and the late Gilbert Bailey. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Elliott Spivey and a brother, Glen Elliott.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Holt Elliott; daughters, Linda Wackerman and husband, Charles of Carthage; Margaret Harper and husband, Larry of Carthage; Sharon Arnold and husband, Bob of Sanford, Florida; step-children, Deborah Johnson & husband, Bo of Lake Norman; Betsy Davis & husband, Rolly of Seagrove; Gwyn Fuller and husband, Rusty of Ft. Mills, SC; Deana Mode & husband, C. M. of Shelby; and Robert D. Wallace, Jr. & wife Margie of Robbins; a sister, Mae Elliott Rogers of Southern Pines; grandchildren, Charles Wackerman, III, Sherry Bialkowski & husband, Rick; Michael Patterson & wife Moran; Bobby Arnold, Jr; step-grandchildren; Allen Johnson, Ashley Joyner & husband, Kevin, Holly Fuller, Erin Mode, Robert Wallace & Savannah Wallace; one great-grandchild, Lilly.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 6:00-8:00 PM at Fry and Prickett Funeral Home and at other times at 301 McNeill Street, Carthage. Following the service the family will receive friends at the home of Margaret Harper, 150 Gilchrist Road, Carthage.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Liberty Hospice, 300 West Pennsylvania Ave, Southern Pines, NC 28387
