Jean Harris Millikan, 91, of Carthage, passed away surrounded by her family, on Sunday, January 7, 2024 at FirstHealth Hospice House.

Born on October 23, 1932, in Moore County, she was a daughter of the late Willie Gray Harris Sr., and Fonnie Blake Harris. Jean graduated with honors from the Women’s College of Greensboro (UNC-G) with a Bachelor’s degree in education. She retired from Moore County Schools after a 30 year career. She also had a daycare for many years and sold Tupperware and microwaves! She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, brother and extended family. She also loved reading, rocking on her screened porch with her dogs, any and all flowers, nature and birds! She was a lifelong member of Fairview Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Joseph Rayford “Ray” Millikan; two sisters: Phyllis Baines and Helen Spainhour.

Jean is survived by her four children: Anne M. Palmer and husband David of Greenville, SC; Alan Millikan and wife Kathleen of Pittsboro, NC; Meredith McDiarmid of Pinehurst, NC; Keith Millikan and wife Kerry of West End, NC; brother: Bill Harris and wife Joyce of West End, NC; 8 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at 2 PM at Fairview Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 1 PM and other times at the home.

The family would like to thank Aegis Home Care and all the special people, especially Callie Brown-Horne, who cared for her in the last years and months of her life.

  1. I am so sorry to hear of Jean’s passing. She and her family were dear friends and colleagues along the way. My youngest son stayed in her daycare for several years. Though I haven’t seen her in many years, I have fond memories of our times together. She was a lovely lady.
