Carthage, NC   Joel Stephen Shields, 55, of Sissonville, WV passed away on Thursday, February  5, 2015 following a short illness.

  Joel had a lengthy career as an environmental specialist that allowed him to travel extensively throughout the United States.

  Joel is survived by his wife Connie, of Sissonville; parents Rev. Warren and Peggy Shields of Eagle Springs, NC; sister Becky McCandless and husband Ken of Eagle Springs, NC; brothers Duane and wife Cindi of Hillsboro, Oregon, and Paul Shields and wife Ann Marie of Jacksonville, Florida; step-daughter Lindsay Walker and husband Adam of Pocatalico, WV; step-son NathanGarnes and wife Renae of Cross Lanes, WV; step-grandson Benjamin Walker; Father and mother-in-law Arthur and Leona Fisher; 3 nieces, 6 nephews, 2 great-nieces, 4 great-nephews, and his beloved dogs Sable, Coco, Bob, Bella and Bubby.


A memorial service was held in Carthage, NC on Sunday, February 8, 2015. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at 1:00pm at the mausoleum at Floral Hills in Pocatalico, WV.   Fry and Prickett Funeral Home in Carthage is assisting the Shields family.   Condolences: PinesFunerals.com
