John Cary Steinert, age 90, of Carthage, NC and formerly of Kinston, NC, died Friday (January 9, 2009) at St. Joseph of the Pines Health Center.
John was born October 28, 1918 in Omaha, Nebraska. He was a graduate of the University of Illinois. He served in the US Army during WWII during which he received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He married Anne H. Jordan of Kinston, NC. He served as secretary of the Kinston Kiwanis for over 40 years. He taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and held many areas of service at Queen Street United Methodist Church in Kinston, NC. After moving to Carthage, NC, he was an active member of Carthage United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne H. Jordan Steinert and a grandson, Michael Steinert Plowman. He is survived by a daughter, Sally S. Plowman and her husband, Chuck of Carthage, NC; a son, John Cary Steinert, Jr. and his wife Delores of Windsor, VA; a twin brother, William C. Steinert of Erie, Il; a granddaughter, Cindi P. Rainey and her husband, Jeremy of Gadsden, Alabama; and a grandson, Mark D. Steinert of Boston, MA.
The funeral service will be held Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Carthage United Methodist Church in Carthage, NC with the Reverend Bob O'Keefe officiating. A graveside service will be at 3:00 p.m. at Westview Cemetery in Kinston, NC. The Reverend Randall Baker will officiate.
A visitation will be held Sunday, January 11, 2009 from 7:00-8:00 PM at Fry and Prickett Funeral Home in Carthage.
