John "Papa John" Rakes, age 80, left to be with the Lord on Friday, May 29, 2009.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM on Sunday (May 31, 2009) at Lighthouse Assembly in Carthage with the Rev. Herman Phillips officiating. Burial will follow at Cross Hill Cemetery.
A native of Slab Fork, WV he was the son of the late G. Reid Rakes and Lilly Bowman Rakes. A son, Melvin Rakes, preceded him in death. He was a US Navy veteran, began a career in the steel industry and later retired as a self-employed carpenter.
He is survived by his precious wife of 42 years, Julia Simpson Rakes; sons Mike and Tim Rakes both of Carthage; a daughter, Vicki St. Clair of Converse, SC; two stepsons, James Joines of Goldston and Philip Joines of Carthage and a stepdaughter, Dawn Joines of Carthage; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM on Saturday (May 30, 2009) at Fry and Prickett Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
