Judy Sherman Barrenger, 85, of Southern Pines, North Carolina, passed away on October 9, 2026. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and a talented woman whose life was filled with family, creativity, a love of animals and a passion for golf.
Judy was born at home in Pleasant Valley, New York, to Francis Sherman and Elsie Martin Sherman. Her arrival was memorable from the very beginning, as a massive early spring snowstorm prevented her parents from making the trip to the hospital.
Judy was the beloved wife of Robert A. Barrenger, surviving at home, and they enjoyed 67 years of married life. Judy was the proud mother of Mary Jane Barrenger, James (Patti) Barrenger, Suzanne Card, and Paul Barrenger. Whether it was a sporting event, a band concert, or a chorus performance, Judy never missed an opportunity to be there for her children.
A woman of many talents, Judy had a creative spirit and gifted hands. She could draw and paint, sew, knit, crochet, and do woodworking; making things that reflected her creative skills. She also had a passion for golf and was an avid player who proudly achieved not one, but two holes-in-one.
Judy was a very successful credit and collections manager for several corporate entities. She loved her work and performed her duties with compassion and thoughtfulness.
A lifelong lover of dogs, Judy had a special place in her heart for her “son” Dixie, our 5th sibling – who brought her much companionship and joy.
A lifetime traveler Judy and Robert took more than 30 cruises. A favorite trip was the mule train ride down into the Grand Canyon. Many fond memories were made during travels both abroad and within the USA before and after her 2002 retirement.
Judy was a proud grandmother to Heather, Jim, Jennifer, Jeffrey, Stephanie, Austin, and Jonathan, and a loving great-grandmother to all her great-grandchildren/Judy was predeceased by her parents, her sister Patricia Kinsella-Dingee, her brother, Francis John Sherman, her son-in-law, David Card and her daughter in law Kim Barrenger.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Peak Resources Pinelake and Liberty Hospice for their kindness, compassion, and dedication in keeping Judy safe and caring for her. Their support and care are deeply appreciated.
Judy will be remembered for her devotion to her family, her many talents, her enthusiasm for life, and the love she showed through simply being there. Her presence will be missed, but the memories she leaves behind will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
There will be no funeral or memorial service at this time. The date for Judy’s celebration of life will be announced later.

Judy spoke of you often and i kind of felt sorry for Mr. Hamlin but she learned a lot from him about the world of credit and collections. I will always remember the night she came home from work and told me that she quit her job. When i asked why, she told me that she wanted to play more golf. Go figure. She did not lose all her income how ever. She always matched up with the older male players at McCanns and won money by beating them. She was never more happy. Thanks for your comments
To one of my favorite families, so sorry to hear about Judy. She had sent a photo of her and my dad and aunts and uncle at the bus stop. Yup a B&W picture LOL. I saw she liked to travel, wasn’t most of them with Williams Lumber? LOL. I see a couple of you got the travel bug. I am sure is was really happy about that. I have some good memories of your whole family. She can rest in peace now. Love You All Shelley
We had some great trips with Sandy and Brenda Williams and some of the best contractors in the country. After we retired in 2002 our choice for a great vacation was cruising. Rented a cabin on a cruise ship every year since and for a lot of years rented a second one. If i was 7 or 8 days younger and still had my JUDY, in better health, i am sure we would still be cruising. The more you cruise the better the perks. Shelly, the best reason to cruise, is you meet some really nice people like we did with the Lancasters from Canada. If you have not cruised before, you should.
Dear Barrenger family,
My family(Williams) and I lived next door on North Avenue back in the 60’s. I have many good memories of Judy and your family. Judy used to cut my hair and often included me in activities with the kids. I had my first trip to a fast food restaurant (Carol’s) with the Barrengers. My first babysitting job was for your family. I always felt welcome in your home. I’m very sorry to hear of Judy’s passing. I hope you can take comfort in your memories of her and knowing how special she was to so many others as well.
Sherry: Thank you for remembering. So enjoyed our next door neighbors ,your mom and dad along with Todd and you
We wish you all the very best as you face life through a new perspective.
Since regards,
Peter Larson
Thank you. Will surely miss her
