Laura Elizabeth Dowd Haywood, 89, passed away on Monday, February 12, 2024. Born in Moore County on November 1, 1934, she was the daughter of Earl and Vela Barker Dowd

Laura proudly graduated from Carthage High School, Class of 1953. She loved helping to organize the yearly class reunion to stay in touch with old friends

Laura always referred to herself as just a bookkeeper”. She used those skills for her entire career at Carthage Fabrics, JP Stevens, Sandhills Community Action Program and with Region H Council of Governments. After retirement in 1985, she and her husband Lester later opened Moore Pottery located in Pinehurst

Laura used her passion for bookkeeping, planning and organizing to serve in her church for as long as she lived, serving as church treasurer and assisting with any mission project that arose. Cameron Boys Home and Camp Duncan were especially close to her heart

 

She was preceded in death by her parents and husbands, Robert (Bobby) McKenzie and Lester Haywood. 

 

She is survived by her children: Robert McKenzie, Jr, Charles B. McKenzie (Cindy), Lisa H Campbell (Domonic) and Terry N. Haywood (Debbie). 

Her grandchildren: Sean McDaniel (Terri), Patrick McDaniel (Megan), Matthew McKenzie (Katie), Christy Tarlton, Ginny Scott, Mandy Grigg (Rob), Alex Prince, (Julieann), Tyler Prince (Taylor), Nicholas Campbell (Alyssa), Andrew Campbell, Brandy Laurencelle(Brian) and Cort Maynard.

Her Great Grandchildren: Liam McDaniel, Kellem McDaniel, Jessica Wilkinson, Sinclair McDaniel, Emerson McDaniel, Jeremiah Scott, Hunter Scott, Brooklyn Calhoun, AJ Haffner, Kennedy Campbell, Samantha Laurencelle and Rebecca Laurencelle. 

A funeral will be held at Bethlehem Baptist Church on Saturday, February 17, 2024. Visitation will begin at 11am followed by the service in the sanctuary at 1200 and then a graveside service. There will be a luncheon in the church fellowship after the services are completed.
