Lester Howell Haywood, age 69 of Peace Rd., died Friday ( April 18, 2008) at his home.after an illness of several weeks.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P. M. Sunday at First Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Tom Herndon. Burial will follow in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery.
A native of Norman in Richmond County, he was a son of the late Jennie Ann Macon and Charlie Benson Haywood. A graduate of Ellerbe High School, he later retired as a supervisor at J. P. Stevens Carpet Plant (now Gulistan) in Aberdeen. He and his wife, Laura, then operated The Moore Pottery Shop in the Theatre Building in Pinehurst and he was also a greeter at The Fresh Market in Southern Pines. In addition to his parents he was predeaceased by: a brother Benson Haywood and seven sisters Veola Hill, Bertha Grant, Donnie Mae Williams, Frances Treece, Blanche Bennett, Pauline Thomas and Margaret Lowdermilk.
He is survived by: his wife Laura Dowd McKenzie Haywood; son Terry N. Haywood and wife Carolyn of High Point; daughter Lisa H. Prince and husband Rodney of West End; step-sons Robert E. McKenzie and wife Katherine of Landrum, S.C. and Charlie B. McKenzie and wife Cynthia of Carthage; brother C. B. Haywood, Jr. of Norman; grandsons Alex Prince, Tyler Prince and Matthew McKenzie; step-grandchildren Christy Tarlton, Virginia Scott, Amanda Caviness, Sean McDaniel, Patrick McDaniel and seven step-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 P. M. Saturday at Fry and Prickett Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
