Lewis Edward Smith, 81, of Hampstead, died Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington, NC.

He was born October 11, 1933, in Laurinburg, NC, to the late Edward Wallace Smith and Gladys Rushing Smith.

Lewis graduated from West End High School in 1951. From there, he went to work for Sears Roebuck then enlisted in the US Army and furthered his education servicing technical equipment. Upon completion of his service, he went to work for the Associated Press in New York, NY.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Al, William, Ray and Earl Smith.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Johnsie B. Smith; daughters, Melanie Pittman and Vicki Stowe ( Ed Stowe, Jr); grandchildren, Matthew and Samuel Stowe; brother, Bob E. Smith (Edythe) and sisters-in-law, Virgie, Diane and Darlene Smith.

A memorial service will be held at 2pm, Sunday, March 29, 2015, at Taylor Memorial Baptist Church, in Jackson Springs, NC. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCare Center, 1414 Physicians Dr., Wilmington, NC 28401.
