Margaret “Peggy” Mullen Ballew, formerly of Peoria, Illinois passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 28, 2019 at 7:31 AM after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:00 PM, Friday, August 2, 2019 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Pinehurst, NC.

Peggy was born September 28, 1946, the daughter of Jerry and Katie Carlson Mullen.  She married Jim Ballew on July 15, 1996 in Jackson Hole, Wy. He passed away on June 2, 2013.

Peggy is survived byJerome P. Kraft, father of her three sons: Gregory Kraft (Jennifer), Mokena, Ill.; Mark Kraft (Marissa), Queen Creek, Az., Eric Kraft (Lyndsey), Tremon, Ill; two step children: Michael Ballew (Heather), Boden, Penn., Leigh Helsel (William), Blacklick, Ohio; twelve grandchildren; two sisters: Gerri Hillis of Simpsonville, SC, Barbara Poppe of Bloomington, Ill.

Mrs. Ballew was preceded in death by her parents and sister: Mary Kathryn Schmelter.  She was a graduate of St. Mary’s Academy, Nauvoo, Ill., Class of 1964 and St Francis Hospital School of Nursing, Peoria, Ill.  Peggy was a dedicated nurse for many years at St. Francis Hospital and Peoria High School. In 2005, she and Jim moved to Seven Lakes, NC.

She was active in the American Red Cross, Sports Medicine and Maternal and Child Health.  She had an avid interest in the stock market, loved gardening, but her passion was golf! She played for the Seven Lakes Golf Club until her illness prevented it.   Her fondest memories were with her grandchildren, boating on the lake and shopping in Pinehurst.

Her family wishes to thank Dr. Carrie Lee, Oncologist at UNC Cancer Hospital, her caretakers and friends; Bill, Mary Ann, Kathy, Iris and many others.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, CB #7295, Chapel Hill, NC 27599
