Marshal Jan Richardson
August 17, 1961 ~ April 16, 2026
Marshal Jan Richardson, 64, of Eagle Springs, NC, died peacefully, surrounded by friends and family, on April 16, 2026.
He was born in Pinehurst in 1961 to Rev. Fred and Jean Richardson. Jan attended East Montgomery and North Moore High Schools, where he was a standout on the basketball court as well as the baseball field. One of his proudest accomplishments was throwing three no-hitters in a single season. Jan later attended Guilford College, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education while serving as a vital pitcher for the Quakers baseball program throughout his collegiate career. After graduating from Guilford, Jan began working at Clayson Knitting in Star, where he managed a shift crew for over 20 years.
Jan never met a stranger. He seemed to have a friend everywhere he went, and if he didn’t know you when he arrived, he made certain you were friends before he left. Jan’s love for baseball was the foundation of many of these friendships, whether he was on the diamond himself or cheering his son, Clay, from the stands. Known for his remarkable memory and even bigger heart, Jan kept a journal of over 200 friends and family members. For many years, he made a point to call or visit as many as possible—whether for a birthday or just to catch up.
Beyond his love for people, Jan was a devoted steward to his animals. Whether he was tending to his cows and chickens or spending time with his beloved dogs, his compassion for animals was a defining part of who he was. It was a rare sight to pass Jan on the road without seeing a four-legged friend riding shotgun or in the bed of his truck.
Because of Jan’s love for and belief in Jesus, his faith has now become sight. He loved reading, quoting, and studying the Holy Bible, as well as listening to many God-called preachers in our area. It was not unusual to hear gospel music playing loudly as you tried to carry on a telephone conversation with him.
Jan has gone to join those who passed before him: his father, Rev. Fred Richardson; his mother, Jean; his brother, Wayne; and his nephew, Nicholas. His legacy of kindness lives on through his son, Clay, and wife, Sara; his beloved granddaughter, Delaney Rae; and his siblings, Cindy (Danny), Martha (Tommy), Debbie (Terry), Freddie, sister-in-law Brenda and his best friend, Terri Russell. He also leaves behind many cherished nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss him dearly.
Graveside service will be 3 PM, Sunday, April 19, 2026 at Mt. Carmel Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 2 PM.
Kennedy Funeral home is serving the Richardson family.

Prayers for Jan’s family. Especially, Cindy and Coach Clay. Grace and Peace
I learned of Jan’s transition today! I’m Devastated!! To many who will not know me, I had the honor of playing basketball with Jan at North Moore. He was an outstanding person, teammates, and friend! To the family I pray that God will continue to watch over and protect you in your time of loss and beyond! RIP Jan!
Family, We are so sorry for your loss. We only knew Jan in his early years at Calvary Baptist Church when our members had the pleasure of having Pastor Fred Richardson and Jean as our pastor and wife. I do remember watching him play basketball at North Moore. What a great athlete he was. Will be praying for God’s Grace and Peace to surround all of you in the days and weeks ahead. Sincerely, Tricia and Charles
