Mona V. Kirkland, 73, passed away peacefully at her home Saturday, November 2, 2024, with her family and her dog Cooper at her side.

Mona was born in Moore County and raised in Robbins, where she graduated from North Moore High School, class of 1969.  She married Larry “Mickey” Kirkland and moved to his home state of Alabama, where their only child Shelby was born.  They eventually moved to Louisiana where Mona attended school to learn court stenography.  When they moved back to North Carolina, they built their forever home in Robbins.  She began working as an official Court Reporter for the State of North Carolina, where she worked in courtrooms in Moore, Randolph, and Montgomery counties until she retired.  In this field of work, she was proud to be part of, she met many friends along the way and made some her chosen family.

Mona had a deep love for animals of all kinds and if any were lucky enough to find their way to her house, they had a home for life.  She enjoyed many hobbies and could do anything she set out to do but she got the most enjoyment from playing slot machines in Cherokee.

Mona is survived by her husband of 53 years, Mickey, daughter Shelby Martindale (Kenneth), and her dog Cooper.

The family would like to give special thanks to Beth, Paula, and Shawn for the loving and respectful care given to Mona and her family in their time of need.

No services are planned at this time.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Liberty Hospice, 300 W. Pennsylvania Avenue, Southern Pines, NC  28387.
