Mrs. Dorothy C. Thomas, age 83, died Saturday (July 15, 2006) at Tara Plantation in Carthage.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A. M. Monday at the Cameron Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Wayne Greene and the Rev. Dr. Joe Babb. Burial will follow in the Cameron Cemetery.
A native of Moore County, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Florence Bailey Comer. She was a graduate of Appalachian State University with a degree in Chemistry and a minor in Physical Education. She loved basketball, having played during her school years and was a coach for Girls High School basketball. During her teaching career she taught at Stokesdale, King, Sanford, Cameron and at Southern Pines high schools. She was an active member of the Moore County Home Demonstration Club, the Cameron Womans Club, and active in the Cameron Baptist Church where she taught a Sunday School class for over thirty years and she was an avid genealogist. She was enrolled as a patient in the Duke University Alzheimers Research program. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son Leslie G. (Jerry) Thomas.
She was a very devoted wife, mother and friend stated a family member.
She is survived by: her husband of 60 years Lloyd L. Thomas; two daughters Sylvia and husband Richard Shelhamer of Cameron, Karen and husband Steve Arrington of Cameron; five sisters Peggy Jordan of Burlington, Anne Lambert of Climax, Jean Marsh of Sanford, Mary Ruth Deese of Sanford and Judy Loving of Cameron; two brothers Frank Comer, Jr. of Sanford and Carl Comer of Concord; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P. M. Sunday at Fry and Prickett Funeral Home in Carthage and at other times at the residence of Sylvia and Richard Shelhamer, 945 U.S. Highway 1, Cameron.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Carolina Piedmont Chapter Alzheimers Association, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215
