Myrtle Dowd McCallum of Carthage died Tuesday morning after several years of declining health.
Myrtle recently celebrated her 97th Birthday on Thanksgiving Day surrounded by family and friends at St. Joseph of the Pines in Southern Pines.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years Carlton A. McCallum; sisters Doris Dowd, Frances Dowd, Carolyn Keith; and daughter in law Harriet Deaton McCallum.
She was a lifelong resident of Carthage and member of the First Presbyterian Church where she was active in all church activities. Myrtle was a graduate of Carthage High School, Wingate College and Queens College. Upon her graduating she began her 30 year career with Moore County Social Services in Carthage. After her retirement she became a caregiver for her mother Ruby Dowd and other elderly relatives.
Mrs. McCallum is survived by her sons, Donald A. McCallum of Seven Lakes, Carlton L. McCallum and wife Peggy of Seven Lakes, John T. McCallum and wife Kathy of Raleigh; four grandchildren Laura M. McIlvaine and husband Doug, David McCallum and wife Kate, John Mark McCallum and Abby M. Barnard and husband Ben; five great grandchildren.
A service of interment will be 1:00 PM Saturday at Cross Hill Cemetery followed by a 2:00 memorial service at First Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Rick Martindale. Following the service there will be a reception in the church fellowship hall.
The family will receive friends at Fry and Prickett Funeral Home on Friday from 5:00 - 7:00 PM.
